Mezzo soprano Laura Mashburn holds a BA from Emory University and a MM in Opera Performance from the Curtis Institute of Music. Ms. Mashburn studied with Marlena Malas in New York, Vera Rosza and Josephine Veasey in London, and Irene Harrower in Atlanta. She has coached with Mikael Eliasen, David Harper, Kamal Kahn, Danielle Orlando, John Keene, Michael Franciosi, and Elsa Mayer Lismann. She is a former winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Regional Auditions, the Liederkranz Competition, and the Cheltenham Festival.
With orchestras in Colombia, England, Italy, Belgium, and the United States, Ms. Mashburn has sung the Mahler Kindertotenlieder and Symphony IV, the Beethoven Ninth Symphony, the Mozart Requiem, Scarlatti’s Christmas Cantata, Elgar’s The Apostles, Bach’s Magnificat and Mass in B Minor, Bononcini’s Stabat Mater, Wagner’s Wesendonk Lieder, Britten’s Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac, Duruflé’s Requiem, Schubert’s Mass in A, Handel’s Messiah, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah. She made her Alice Tully Hall debut when invited by composer Ned Rorem to sing in a concert celebrating his sixty-fifth birthday. Her highlighted opera credits include Madam Flora in Menotti’s The Medium which was cast and directed by the composer, Mrs. Schofield in the world premier of William Schuman’s A Question of Taste at Glimmerglass Opera, Serse in Serse (Handel), Juno in Semele (Handel), Ottavia in The Coronation of Poppea (Monteverdi), la Principessa in Suor Angelica (Puccini), Perichole in La Perichole (Offenbach), and Lucretia in The Rape of Lucretia (Britten).
Ms. Mashburn teaches voice at Western Connecticut State University. Since 1992, she has maintained a large private studio in Litchfield, Connecticut, focusing on training the high school singer. Her students have won many awards locally, regionally, and nationally. Students have been accepted to study classically at New England Conservatory of Music, San Francisco Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (Austria), Manhattan School of Music, NYU, Westminster Choir College, Syracuse University, Ithaca College, Smith College, Drew University, University of Connecticut, the Hartt School of Music, and Boston University. Students have been accepted to continue their music theater studies at NYU, Ithaca College, Catholic University, Pace University, SUNY Potsdam, Boston Conservatory, North Carolina School for the Arts, and AMDA and their jazz and contemporary vocal studies at Berklee College School of Music. You can hear many of her students in lead and supporting roles in their high school musicals and in local theater productions.
Ms. Mashburn has been a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing since 1992, serving four terms as President of the Connecticut Chapter and two terms as State Governor for Connecticut. She regularly adjudicates competitions at the state, regional, and national levels, in addition to the Heida Hermanns International Music Competition.
